Hydropower Project Experience

Jamie Creek Hydroelectric Project

(Sequoia Energy, Boralex Inc)

Sigma provided engineering design, approvals and tender for the General Construction contract and Water to Wire Turbine Supply contract, services during construction and commissioning of the 22 MW run of river scheme. This high head scheme with gross head of 475 m consists of a water transfer and main power intakes, water transfer / feeder pipe, 2.7 km long penstock and powerhouse housing two Pelton turbines. The project began operations in 2014.

Dasque and Middle Creek Hydroelectric Projects

(Swift Power LP)

Sigma provided engineering design, approvals and tender for the Water to Wire Turbine Supply contract and the General Construction contract, services during construction and commissioning for two run of river projects totaling 20 MW installed capacity. The project, located near Terrace, British Columbia, was completed in 2015.

Atlin Hydroelectric Project

(Taku Land Corporation (TLC))

Sigma assisted TLC with the complete project development of the 2 MW Atlin Hydroelectric Project. This project was submitted under BC Hydro’s 2005 ‘Atlin RFEI’ call for proposals for displacement of the diesel fuel used in the town’s electrical system. Sigma performed project permitting and licencing and completed detailed design, procurement and performed construction field services. The project began operation in April 2009.

Barr Creek Hydroelectric Project

Sigma provided engineering design, approvals and tender for the General Construction contract and Water to Wire Turbine Supply contract, services during construction and commissioning of the 4.4 MW run of river scheme. Furry Creek Hydroelectric Project

Sigma provided engineering design, environmental assessment, and approvals for this 10.8 MW hydroelectric development near Squamish, BC. The Project consists of: an intake structure, 3.0 km long 1.2 metre diameter pipe (HDPE, ductile iron and steel), a powerhouse that houses the turbine/generator, access roads, a substation and 1.4 km length of 69 KV transmission line connecting to an existing BC Hydro line.

Hartley Bay Hydroelectric Project

(Hartley Bay First Nation)

Sigma is involved with the remote community of Hartley Bay in determining the site and providing the design/tender of a 900 kW hydroelectric plant. The project is supported by the B.C. Government’s First Nation and Remote Community Clean Energy Program. The hydro plant is an isolated system that will generate over 2GWh per year to offset the use of diesel-generated electricity provided by a 3-unit 1000kW diesel system.

McKnight Creek Diversion Project

(Synex Energy Resources Ltd) 

Engineering design, environmental assessment, and approvals for the diversion of a portion of the flows from McKnight Lake into the nearby Brown Lake reservoir via a lake intake, 420 metre long tunnel and 1,200 metre long pipeline.

Spillimacheen Generating Station

Study of upgrade and other long term options (up to addition of 14 MW) for an existing 4 MW station.

Quinsam/Ladore Diversions Project

(BC Hydro, Resource Smart Program)

Study of alternatives for increasing flow through 3 hydro plants on the Campbell River. Included efficiency improvement study and recommendations to alter operating regime.

Clayton Falls, Bella Coola

Design and project management of 1300 kW addition to an existing BC Hydro facility as an independent power project.

Iskut Hydro Power Project

(International Skyline Gold Corporation)

Preliminary studies of the 18 MW project to serve a proposed mine in northwestern BC. Work included hydrological studies, and hydraulic studies and preliminary designs to address high seasonal sediment loads in addition to developing general project arrangements and producing a project cost estimate.

Feasibilty study for a proposed 7 MW hydro project in Atlin, BC.

Yongnian Cogeneration Project

(Synex Noram Power Corporation)

Technical review and preparation of the power supply and heat purchase contracts for this 24 MW coal fired project located in Hebei Province, China.

Sechelt Creek Hydro Project

Contractor’s Design Engineer with responsibility for detailed design of the 4,300 metre long, 1.5 metre diameter welded steel low and high pressure penstock which included powerhouse bifurcation, two pipe bridges, thrust blocks and appurtances for this 16 MW design-built project.
